“Natural beekeepingĀ is an approach to beekeeping encouraging minimal manipulation and as hands-off an approach as possible.”

We want to practice this bee-centric practice as a way to increase both the number of healthy bees and the number of beekeepers.

There are many successful commercial and homesteader natural beekeepers using permaculture principles that strengthen the honeybee population.

“We don’t want one beekeeper with 10,000 hives, we want 10,000 beekeepers with one hive”.

Principles of Natural Beekeeping

  1. Catch local bees
  2. Don’t feed them sugar
  3. Don’t chemically treat their hives

Our growing Midwest community builds Improved Layens Hives and Swarm Traps for it’s members. These excellent plans were created by Dr. Leo Sharashkin and are available at horizontalhive.com, however we have members that also use other hive types (Langstroth, etc.)

We have community beehive builds throughout the year:

  • Cowgill, MO
  • Eaglesville, MO
  • Joplin, MO (In planning)
  • Lee’s Summit, MO
  • Lebanon, MO (In planning)
  • Overland Park, KS (In planning)
  • Tonganoxie, KS
  • Topeka, KS
